Stomp is our small independent shoe shop hoping to make a big impression! On deciding to open a Children's Shoe Shop, our approach has been to make it as easy as possible for children to have shoes fitted correctly in a relaxed and hopefully fun environment.
The decision to take on our shop was initially financially based, but we also gave particular consideration to the accessibility of the shop, and whilst not a main 'High Street' location, we do benefit from numerous parking choices in the immediate vicinity that makes a visit to us a lot easier.
From the outset, we wanted to target brands that are renowned for their quality, fit and value for money and also to stock a variety of British and European styles. We also wanted to ensure that we were able to offer customers as many choices as possible.
Given the size of our store, we have been limited somewhat in the styles that we can physically carry, however customers can choose from a variety of brands. The brands that we have selected to stock in the shop have been very well received and have also led to discussions and suggestions from customers (i.e. the children!) about specific styles they like or would like to wear - Vans in particular were stocked after numerous requests and recommendations.
We have contacted the local schools around us to identify any specific requirements - one school in particular requests pupils to wear brown school shoes and so we keep in stock a small selection of brown shoes, both in lace up and velcro styles.
An area of particular success in our first year has been the sales of children's sports shoes. We have stocked the Mizuno brand since we opened, and we have kept in stock rugby boots, football boots and trainers. In addition we ensure that that we keep in stock seasonal sports shoes including astro shoes, running spikes and cricket shoes.
Other areas of the business that have proved to be popular have been our loyalty programme and 'Back to School' shoe fitting appointments. Every pair of non sale shoes that are purchased receives a stamp on a loyalty card. Once six stamps have been collected customers receive a discount off their seventh pair of shoes.
We ran our 'Back to School' fitting appointments in August and September. In addition to fitting shoes throughout the day we offered appointments to parents who found it easier to visit us between 5 and 6.30pm on weekdays. It was especially popular with parents with two or more children who could have the shop to themselves and know that they would have our undivided attention!
We strive to ensure that all who visit us depart satisfied that their shoes have been fitted correctly and that the experience has been one that they would wish to repeat!
